Atal Tunnel and Himachal’s High Reaches Blanketed in Early Season Snowfall

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh were blanketed in snow for the second consecutive day on Monday, October 6, 2025, causing a noticeable drop in temperatures across the region.

Key areas in Lahaul and Spiti district, including Gondhla and Keylong, received 5 cm and 4 cm of fresh snow, respectively. The season’s first snowfall also transformed the landscape around the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, Kullu, coating the iconic structure in a layer of white.

The weather system also brought widespread rain and thunderstorms to other parts of the state. Guler recorded the highest rainfall at 42 mm since Sunday evening, followed by Nagrota Suriyan (38.4 mm) and Bharwain (37 mm). Residents in areas like Jot, Sundernagar, Kangra, and Shimla experienced thunderstorms, while gusty winds with speeds between 41 and 57 kmph swept through several towns.

In response to the active weather, the meteorological office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts. A yellow warning for thunderstorms and high winds in isolated areas remains in effect for Tuesday, October 7.
