Karan Johar on Dharma’s New Chapter: “Profitability is My Responsibility Now”
Filmmaker Karan Johar has opened up about the significant shift at his production house, Dharma Productions, following the sale of a 50% stake to businessman Adar Poonawalla. In a candid reflection, Johar acknowledged a renewed sense of accountability for the company’s financial performance, marking a new era for the storied Bollywood banner.
Johar revealed that the deal has fundamentally changed his approach to greenlighting projects. The focus, he stated, has pivoted squarely toward commercial viability and profitability. This shift means that some passion projects may now be deprioritized.
He specifically mentioned his proposed film Homebound, a project he has been personally invested in, expressing uncertainty about its future. “I can’t say if I’ll make Homebound in the future,” Johar admitted, highlighting the tough choices that come with his new fiscal responsibilities.
This move signals a major structural change in one of India’s most prominent production companies, with Johar embracing his role as a steward for both creative vision and business growth in the evolving landscape of Indian cinema.
