Heavy Rain Alert: Uttarakhand’s Chamoli District Bans Trekking, Construction Amid Landslide Fears
The district administration in Chamoli has imposed a ban on all trekking activities in the high Himalayan regions and halted construction work at vulnerable sites after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district.
The IMD forecast predicts intense rainfall from Sunday until October 7th, impacting Chamoli and several other districts in Uttarakhand. In response, the district administration has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety.
All previously granted trekking permissions have been revoked with immediate effect. Additionally, government departments and construction agencies have been directed to stop all work involving laborers in landslide-prone and high-risk zones.
Vivek Prakash, the Additional District Magistrate, has appealed to residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution. He advised the public, especially those in higher altitudes and sensitive areas, to avoid all non-essential travel.
The administration has warned that the heavy rainfall is likely to trigger landslides, road blockades, and a rise in water levels of rivers and streams. Residents are urged to stay away from risk-prone areas, ignore rumors, and rely only on official updates released by the administration.
